The Art Of Facilitation
A Six-day Intensive Workshop

with Lysbeth Borie and Caroline Estes*

Consensus decision making builds unity and effectiveness in organizations of all types. It enables groups to tap into the best thinking of their members, promoting their fullest commitment. It strengthens communication, encourages teamwork, facilitates effective leadership and provides a climate of mutual respect that lays a firm foundation for setting and achieving goals. Consensus is used by a variety of organizations, including: Hewlett-Packard, Saturn Corporation, The Evergreen State University, and the League of Women Voters.

Our six-day intensive workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to consensus and facilitation for those new to the process, as well as an opportunity for experienc ed facilitators to hone their skills. If you join us for a workshop, you will gain a firm grounding in:

  • history and development of consensus decision making
  • philosophy and values behind consensus and facilitation
  • the elements of consensus
  • when and how to use them
  • techniques for effective facilitation, including agenda building and working with difficult personalities and situations

Integrating Theory with Practice

This six-day intensive provides plenty of opportunity to work together in situations that are drawn from your own life experiences. You will have an opportunity to practice facilitation of a role-played meeting, as well as observing and evaluating facilitation by other participants and receiving feedback on yourself as a facilitator. By the end of the workshop, you will have the skills needed to:

  • make an introductory presentation of consensus and facilitation to a group in which you are involved
  • facilitate effective meetings at an introductory to intermediate level
  • incorporate the spirit of consensus into your work with groups and individuals, whether
  • working specifically by consensus or not

*Alpha Institute founder, facilitator and trainer Caroline Estes will join the workshop for a question and answer session and to observe and give valuable feedback on student facilitation. Through more than 40 years' experience, Caroline has facilitated groups of up to 600 people and has worked with dozens of organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada, including Hewlett-Packard, the University of Oregon, the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America and the national (U.S.) Green Party.

"The course was outstanding! As teachers, Caroline and Lysbeth truly exemplify 'servant-leadership' of the highest quality. The workshop was filled with information and insight, helpful feedback and gentle reflections, and a depth of skill and understanding that I believe is probably unsurpassed in any other consensus training in the country."
